A RHAYADER teenager has been recognised for her efforts volunteering in the local community.

Rhian Evans, 17, from Pantydwr was presented with several certificates in recognition of her 200 hours of volunteering.

Rhian, who will soon be going to university to study mental health nursing, has been giving up her free time caring for residents at Rhayader’s Crosfield House care home, as well as spending even more of her time helping to organise activities and social events for the residents.

“I’ve really enjoyed the work at Crosfield House,” said Rhian. “The staff are all extremely friendly and the residents receive a very high level of care and seem very happy.”

Presenting the Millennium Certificate, a recognised qualification at universities, deputy manager and volunteer co-ordinator Shirley Jones said: “The Millennium Volunteer Scheme really gives young people an extra string to their bow when applying for a job or place in higher education.

“Volunteering in this way shows potential employers that the individual has the commitment and drive needed in the modern workplace, and with youth unemployment at record levels, it is important to stand out from the crowd.”
