A Reprieve for a cashpoint in Presteigne has been welcomed.
HSBC’s decision not to remove their ATM cashpoint after the Presteigne branch closes on March 9 has been welcomed by local AM and MP Kirsty Williams and Roger Williams.
“I am delighted that HSBC have agreed to leave this vital resource in the town whilst they apply for planning permission for a new stand-alone cash machine in the town. Local people and visitors to the town need easy access to cash and it would have been madness to remove it,” said Kirsty.
After HSBC could not be persuaded to keep the branch open, Kirsty, Roger, the Town Council and the Chamber of Trade lobbied HSBC to leave the ATM at the branch while a planning application for a new cash machine is considered by Powys County Council.
Now HSBC have announced that they will be leaving the ATM in its current location at the branch until a new one can be established in the town.
Roger Williams said: “While we all remain disappointed that HSBC cannot be persuaded to leave the branch open, I am pleased that at least they will leave the ATM in town until a new one can be installed. We continue with positive discussions with Lloyds TSB, the only bank left in Presteigne, about installing a cash machine in their branch, and I am hopeful we will have a positive result.”
l HSBC’s bank closure will leave only Lloyds TSB in the town. Last week the County Times launched its own petition campaign to support the town and try to stop the closure.
