BUSINESSES in Welshpool have hit out over the town’s controversial one-way system.

90 per cent of town centre businesses in Welshpool say the town’s one-way system has had a negative impact on trade, according to a survey conducted by residents John Evans and Dave Brown.

The two campaigners produced a survey to find out what town centre businesses thought about the current traffic system, with 54 out of 60 businesses quizzed saying it has had a negative impact on the town.

Three businesses thought the one-way system had a positive impact, while a further three said it made no difference. The rest said it has had a negative effect on them.

45 of the 60 say the town should revert back to the former traffic system and 54 out of the 60 said the one-way system had affected the footfall in the town centre.

More than 90 per cent also said they thought the one-way system is unsafe for pedestrians.

Mr Evans and Mr Brown handed the survey to Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies on Monday, who then handed it to County Councillor David Jones, who is leading the Powys County Council review of the system.

Mr Evans said: “I hope the council takes the views of town businesses into consideration.”
