AN INQUIRY has been launched after Newtown Cricket Club was the victim of “mindless vandals” last weekend.

Club chairman Peter Davies was aghast to discover extensive damage to the club’s outfield area with the police now heading an investigation to apprehend the culprits.

At least two vehicles were used with the tracks showing that attempts at handbrake turns were made.

The end result was the wet pitch being extensively damaged, leaving the club with a race against time to repair the area before the start of the new season in April.

Mr Davies said: “We are appalled to see the good work done by volunteers vandalised in this way, the matter has been reported to the police and we would be grateful for any information regarding this matter.

"These are clearly the actions of mindless vandals and heartless yobs. What they have done is simply disgusting.

“I am honestly heartbroken, like many others at the club, that anyone would be so malicious as to do this to a club which is run by a small band of volunteers who provide cricket to the town.

“The people who did this clearly have no real social life and very little personality if they choose to spend their Saturday nights doing doughnuts on a cricket pitch.”

Meanwhile a Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson urged anyone with information to contact Newtown Police.

“We are looking into this matter and would ask  that anyone who can help us with our inquiries to contact Newtown police on 101.”
