COUNCILLORS have spoken out after residents raised their fears over claims of a spate of burglaries.

There have been reports of breaks-ins across Holywell over the last two weeks as well as in nearby Carmel and Greenfield.

Holywell town councillor John Griffiths said: “The police were at the council meeting (on Tuesday) and said they had some figures and that the rumours were exaggerated. They said they were looking at it very carefully.

“In one of the incidents I’ve been told about a man who had gone out for the night and when he got back there were two fellas in his house who had got in through the back.

“The message going out is make sure you secure your houses.”

Holywell town councillor Karen Davies added: “Everyone is locking their doors. In the past, if you were in the house you wouldn’t necessarily lock your back doors but now everyone is.”

Holywell councillor Peter Curtis said: “It’s since Christmas, they know there’s ipods in houses and other electronic items they can get rid of quickly.

“Burglary is the lowest form of non-violent crime there is in my book.”

Les Smith, a resident on West Drive in Holywell, said: “I know there’s been two on this road. It’s happening randomly all over Holywell. It’s crazy, there’s been a big increase since Christmas.

“They’re coming in when people are upstairs. There was one in the Strand area where a lady was in bed and they broke in while she was in the house.”

One young mum on West Drive, who asked not to be named, said: “I’m very scared. They seem to be happening between 2am and 5am in the morning. We’ve spoken to the police and suggested a CCTV camera is installed on the lamppost on the road.”

Other roads residents say have been targeted in Holywell are Pen Y Ball, Hillside Court and Strand Crescent, as well as houses in Carmel and Greenfield.

One concerned resident on Strand Walk said she knew of a disabled lady who had been targeted. “They climbed through her window when she was in bed,” she said. “They took a lot of money and her laptop.”

Another resident on Strand Walk said: “I’ve always lived around here and never locked the door when I’m in the house but now we’re locking the door as soon as we get in.

“People are worried about it. The Strand area has been one of the worst hit over the past two weeks. I know someone who was sitting in the living room when they came into the kitchen. You shouldn’t feel like that in your own home.”

Residents reported seeing armed police in the Holway Road area yesterday morning.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “In the past couple of days we have been executing search warrants in connection with burglaries. Enquiries are continuing.”

A spokesman for Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch said: “We are encouraging people to sign up to the Neighbourhood Watch Owl alerts.”

Surely people who live in Carmel and Greenfield would lock their doors as a mater of course?

The sun rises and never sets in Carmel, panoramic views, clean streets, open fields and livestock in the meadows, a place to admire. I have not heard of any probs in Carmel but 2 burglaries in Greenfield. The word on the ground is, the thieves were caught yesterday near Holway Road.

It is disgusting that you you should have to lock yourself in the house. House burglary appears to be acceptable these days. Insurance doesn't pay out for distraction burglaries on the elderly. Elderly people are now imprisoned in their own homes & often afraid to answer the phone. Sign of the times I'm afraid. Very sad. Why?

I found a burglar in my home. I restrained him, called the police, who arrested me for false Imprisonment, the fact is unless the burglar has your goods in his pockets, he's only guilty of trespass. Luckily the gudge saw things my way and threw it out. I now employ a large nasty dog with very sharp teeth and a short fuse.

yes it is the sign of the times and why because the police arent police any more and untill they stop the drugs on the street no home is safe it has to be 0 tolerence by the police or the times will only get worse

In Tory GB there is no deterent as shown by Ken Clarke in asking the courts not to jail crims as it cost money, a fine example is in the news today with a strutting thug walking from court rejoicing that he had been found guilty of an awful assault and given a slap on the wrist.

whats to fear in going to prison...get a year do a few months...with three square meals a day...just like an extended holiday to take a rest from your exhausting schedule of criminal activity...and even a credit union to save your hard earned prison pay in...for your coming out day party

You do have to wonder if we have things the right way round. If a pensioner were in prison, he would have, as you say Tony, 3 square meals cooked for them, free rent, bills paid, gyms. library, TV, IT, medical care as opposed to having to choose between sitting huddled trying to keep warm or having a decent meal.

Conhill, are you talking from past experience? If not what is the source of your inside knowledge?

  14. Posted by: a cahill at 09:23 on 24 January 2012 Report

lib...four days after the article is published you make such a puerile comment...with the knowledge that daisymay displays it would in your view make her an arch criminal...looking forward to seeing how Labour deal with this problem they created now they have decided to back the present Govt to the hilt on the economy

  15. Posted by: liberty1 at 19:58 on 24 January 2012 Report

Conhill, the reason days have elapsed is due to the fact that I have a life and after working hard to earn money and pay taxes it is good to spend time with family and friends. Must point out some of your errors, 1) the article was published on 19/1, I made my 1st comment on that day, my 2nd was 23/1, the 5th day since the article was published, brush upon your maths old boy.

  16. Posted by: liberty1 at 20:21 on 24 January 2012 Report

Conhill, yes I know it's up on and not upon, 2) why try to bring dm into this? if she wishes to reply to my comment she will, stop trying to hide behind a womans skirts, also you once again blame Labour for everything, is that because they soon found you out and sent you packing with a flea in your ear same as Plaid did? why not be more original with your replies?
