A PUBLIC consultation into plans for a multi-million pound shopping development in Welshpool will take place next week.

The one-day consultation will be held at the Corn Exchange from 2pm to 8pm on Tuesday, January 10, into plans by J Ross Development to construct a shopping development in the town’s Church Street car park.

The proposals are for three shops to be built on the car park.

The town council is urging as many people as possible to attend the consultation and put forward their views.

Town Clerk Robert Robinson said: “The planning committee recommended that such an important decision to the town be made by its residents so we will hold a public consultation.

“We really want to hear from as many people as possible, there is no point just having a hundred people turn up, we want to see thousands if possible.

“We also want to hear from people right across the board, especially the younger generation, and the form people will be asked to fill out will have various boxes for people to tick so we know the age of those expressing the opinions.”

Meanwhile, Mr Robinson said that he believed work would begin on the Tesco units on January 7 but echoed the feelings of most of Welshpool when he added: “But I have heard all this before!”

Home Bargains has already seen its planning application approved but another of the stores eyeing Welshpool, Peacocks, has recently slipped into financial problems.

Pets at Home is the third national retailer expected to take a unit.

The public consultation for the new Spar Car Park retail development takes place on Tuesday, January 10 from 2pm to 8pm at the Town Hall’s Corn Exchange.
