DRIVERS going through Builth Wells had to be diverted today (January 5) as the town's main street was closed by the fire service.
Strong winds had blown roof tiles from the rugby club and the street had to be closed by the emergency services, in order to take off the remaining dangerous slabs.
An unsafe sign outside the fish and chip shop had already seen fire crews in action earlier that morning.
The sign above the Merrie Fryer fish and chip shop had become dangerously insecure during the overnight high winds.
Crew Manager John Walters said: “If it had come down on someone they would have had their chips.”
Fire fighter Alison Ryland commented: “It’s fair to say the sign had been battered overnight”.
The usually one-way Strand allowed two-way traffic through in order to accommodate the closure of the High Street.
Meanwhile prolonged periods of rain has meant the nearby River Wye is particularly high this week.
