LLANDUDNO has been chosen as one of four towns in Wales to host an innovative piece of art to mark the Olympic celebrations.
The fuselage of an old DC-9 aircraft will be transported to the town and then hauled into place by members of local sports clubs, youth groups and community organisations.
Adain Avion, a national art project, will host a programme of cultural activities reflecting the distinctive history and culture of the area, involving contemporary artists and local communities.
The highlight will be a dance movement for an audience inside the body of the plane created by performance artist Cai Tomos with Margot Catlin.
Margot is the daughter of the late Will Catlin who owned the town’s Arcadia Theatre. Seeing that daughter Margot was a keen roller skater he built a rink for her in front of the theatre.
She went on to join The Catlin Follies dance troupe that was based at the Arcadia and has worked with Cai who has created A Solo for Margot which revisits her memories of dancing which will be performed inside the plane.
Llandudno Town Councillor Felicity Elphick said she was thrilled the town had been chosen as a destination.
She said it was “absolutely amazing” that the project was coming to Llandudno.
Cllr Elphick believed the regeneration of Theatr Colwyn and the recent appointment of Alfredo Cramerotti as director of Mostyn art gallery would add to the ambience of the event and make local residents feel more connected with the Olympics.
She said: "The view of the Olympics in North Wales is very negative, that it's all London based with nothing to benefit the young.
“The fact that something related with the Olympics is coming here may change that and for our tourism it's vital.”
