CARRYING the flame of the Olympic spirit in 2012, Bishops Castle Community College student Mathew Clarke has been chosen as one of the Torch Bearers for the London Games.

Mathew, 15, who lives at Lydbury North, said the news of his selection for the national relay of torch bearers had come as a bit of a surprise.

“I was in the middle of a PE mock exam and had the last two questions to do when one of the teachers came in and asked to borrow me for a few minutes.

“I thought I was in some sort of trouble and my mum and sister were there, but I was told of my selection. I was pleased but it meant I messed up the last two questions of my exam,” said Mathew.

Mathew’s parents are Colin and Sharon Clarke and Mathew is keen on rugby, football, basketball, fitness and sport generally.

“My dad said he had signed me up for it and I never thought I would get it but kept on hearing  that I had got through to the next round of selection. I never thought I would actually get it,” said Mathew.

Mathew is still waiting to hear more details of his part in the route. He is also looking forward to his uniform arriving and to find out whether he will be able to see any of the Olympic events.

“I’ll have to start getting into the gym more often to be fit but I would be doing that anyway,” he added.”
