Girl knocked down on the way to Wrexham school

A 12-YEAR-OLD girl suffered serious injuries when she was hit by a car on her way to school.

The collision happened next to a bus stop on Abenbury Road, which runs between Cefn Road and Bryn-y-Grog Hill in Whitegate, Wrexham, yesterday.

Four police cars and two ambulance crews rushed to the scene and the road was closed for a number of hours.

The girl was knocked down by a black Vauxhall Corsa at about 8.20am, and was treated for head injuries before being taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said her injuries were not life-threatening.

Neighbours said schoolchildren congregated at the bus stop at about that time to catch buses to both Clywedog School, Wrexham, and the Maelor School, Penley.

Many residents said they had long-standing concerns about safety on the road, especially after a four-year-old boy was seriously injured after being hit by a car in May 2009, outside the Abbey Premier store further down the road.

Amanda Hughes, who works at the store said: “I saw his mother earlier and obviously it brought back bad memories for her of what she went through.”

She said she thought the road was dangerous and residents had been asking for safety measures for a number of years.

Neighbour Jane Harper, who lives next to where yesterday’s accident happened, said she was also worried about the safety of the road.

“I’ve had four cats run down on that road. You do worry, especially if you’ve got small children,” she said.

Neighbour Steven Alan Hughes added: “There should have a school crossing there. You’ve got to be careful when you walk down that road.”

Whitegate Cllr Marc Jones said: “It’s a terrible road, it’s a fast road through a built up area. It’s an accident black spot.

“I will be asking the council to review what measures can be taken to make the road safer.”

He said police had performed spot checks and speed checks on the road in the past.

“Obviously in this case we don’t know what happened, but it’s unacceptable that anyone should get knocked over. It’s a built up area on both sides of the road and there’s no safe crossing area, so maybe we should push for that.”

Police said investigation into yesterday’s accident is ongoing and are appealing for witnesses.

Rather than asking what measures can be taken to make the road safer, why not ask to take measures to ensure housing estates aren't built along "fast" (30mph) roads?

And the same issue applies to the bus stop on Queensway....where there are too many children waiting for two different buses on a very narrow pavement requiring people to cross the road to get to Gwenfro School with younger children

I was there when the crash happened, the girl is one of my friends. The speed of the road isn't a problem, it's the fact that there is nowhere for you to cross the road safely On our way back home from school we have to cross that road. Just build a zebra crossing and this would never have happened. And she's 11. Not 12

There are similar issues across the county; heavily used bus stops by kids where there are no real crossing points. Those traffic island things are useless. I also saw the incident happen yesterday on my way to work; it was most distressing. I hope she gets well soon.

all i have to say iam glad the young girl is well but that memory is goin to be with her for the rest of her life !!! And why does it take something like this to happen for wbcc to do something about it where are all theses zebra crossings or speed camaras sureley to god the council give the permit for kids to be picked up so were are the safety measures ????? an the same goes to gwenfro school that he been there for years what does it take a DEATH. ???

I agree with Beth. I use this road frequently & have never thought of it as a fast road. Instead of bumps which damage your vehicle & make it uncomfortable for elderly infirm passengers, why don't they put in zebra crossing any more.

I hate speed bumps since my stroke victim brother became very ill the day after travelling through a housing estate. The ones in Gresford are particularly bad.

A zebra crossing is useless if someone runs out into the road. When I was in school we were told - Stop, Look & Listen - even Darth Vader had an advert on the telly saying the same message. There are a number of islands on that road to help people to cross safely.

Zebra crossings are useless as the drivers dont bother to stop - zipping quickly up to 50 in a 30 to 'beat' the pedestrian. Every 30 limit in North Wales is now deemed by most drivers to be a 40 minimum. and 5 seconds after the lights turn to red is still 'ok' to zip through. Gatsos are no longer any use, average speed cameras everywhere is the answer - I know Ill be ok - how about YOU?
