Carnival Queen Rhian will switch on Welshpool lights

THE Welshpool Christmas lights will be switched on by the Carnival Queen on December 2.

Starting at the Tourist Information Centre in Welshpool the parade will move off at 6.45pm to make its way to the Town Hall in time for the Carnival Queen, Rhian Thomas, to switch the Christmas lights on at 7pm.

This year, Welshpool Town Council is holding a fancy dress competition.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Just come along to the Tourist Information Centre by 6.30pm where the best dressed will be judged and prizes awarded.

“The fancy dress is open to all ages and the judging will be across three categories: up to the age of seven, seven to 11 years and 12 years to adult.”

The parade, led by Newtown Minstrels Marching Band, is joined this year by Welshpool 1st Clives Own Cubs carrying lanterns that they have made; the Carnival Queen and her attendants; the Poppy Queen and,, of course, Father Christmas and his helpers, will make their way to the Town Hall all in time for Rhian Thomas to switch the lights on at 7pm.

Santa will join the mayor, Councillor Estelle Bleivas and the Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, for a short walkabout before retiring to his comfy chair in the Market Village to meet the youngsters from 7.15pm

The Corn Exchange will be open for a Community Table Top Sale, where various stalls will offer a wide range of gifts and crafts, raffles and tombola.

Tea, coffee and mince pies will also be available.
