Swalec Division Two West
Builth Wells 13 Aberystwyth 10
BUILTH Wells marked the official opening of their new floodlights with a Mid Wales derby victory over Aberystwyth.
However the Bulls were made to toil througout and survived an early scare when a knock on prevented Aberystwyth scoring a second minute try.
Builth were first on the score board as outside half Luke Offa struck an excellent penalty.
The Bulls still failed to spark with Offa failing with a second penalty attempt before prop Prys Lewis went over for a try following a driving maul with outside-half Llynarch ap Myrddin adding the conversion.
Builth should have reduced the arrears before the break only for the usually reliable Offa to miss a second penalty.
Builth were back in the game shortly after the breal with Ben Duggan gathering the ball from a line-out to power over for a try with Offa atoning for his previous two penalty misses by adding the conversion.
Builth stretched the Seasiders defence and were awarded a spate of penalties which Offa failed to convert.
The misses were punished when Builth flanker Olly Bastable was sent to the sin bin for illegal play with Myrddin levelling matters with the penalty.
However Aberystwyth shot themselves in the foot to allow Builth to regain a lead which they held on to for a grateful derby victoru.
Veteran hooker Eifion Hughes tackled from the side of a ruck to concede a 35 metre penalty with further dissent seeing the kick moved 10 yards closer to the posts.
It was left to the ice cold nerve of John Thurston to kick the penalty and complete a hard-fought Bulls win.
