THE company behind the proposed construction of a nuclear power plant on Anglesey has said they do not think a third crossing to the Island is necessary.
In September, Anglesey Council received a report from independent consultants Grontmij, which said that a third crossing may be needed to cope with increased traffic as a result of congestion caused by the construction of Wylfa B.
However, Horizon Nuclear Power, the company behind the proposed construction of the new plant, near Cemaes Bay, said a third construction is not part of their plan.
Horizon spokesman, Leon Flexman, said: “We’re still finalising all the plans but we do not believe that the project relies on a third crossing based on our analysis so far.”
The original Grontmij report said: “If the developer cannot show that the number of road based freight and people movements will not contribute to the existing congestion issues on the bridges, the construction of a third crossing of the Menai Strait may be necessary.”
An Anglesey Council spokesman said: “As an Authority, our main priority, in view of possible new nuclear build at Wylfa, is to secure improvements to the existing A5025 between Valley and Cemaes.
“We would, of course, support any proposals to create a third crossing on the Menai Straits, but this would ultimately be a decision for the Welsh Government."
A huge consultation process regarding the proposals for the plant is due to start next year, after the technical details of the construction are finalised.
