OFFICIALS ARE hopeful that their bid for cash from a tourism fund will go towards visitor attractions in Conwy.

As part of the Gwynt y Mor Tourism Compensation Fund, which provides support for tourism initiatives in the coastal areas of Conwy and Denbigshire in the vicinity of the Gwynt y Mor windfarm, RWE NPower renewables set aside £690,000 to be spent on large-scale tourism projects, splitting the fund between the two counties.

The money would be available for three years from November, when the construction phase starts on the windfarm project.

At a Cabinet meeting, Conwy County Borough Council proposed to spend their share of the fund on Llandudno's pier, the nearby North Shore slipway and the Gwynt y Mor Trail.

The officers proposed that £114,500 be put towards the pier - specifically the renovation and improvement of its landing stage, which would allow steamer ships to dock at the pier. Moves to bring day tripper ships back to the pier were highlighted in the Destination Conwy Action Plan in July.

They will also approach RWE to add £100,000 towards the cost of a new North Shore slipway, which would be used by the town's Sailing Club and other groups.
The largest of the three projects would be the Gwynt y Mor trail, which was orignally developed as a project to link together walking routes, cycle paths and nature reserves in Conwy and Denbighshire, leading from Llandudno to Prestatyn. The total cost of delivering the plan would be £283,7000, of which £130,500 could go to Conwy.
