MALDWYN Leisure Centre in Newtown could be set to for its greatest enhancement in a generation.
Powys County Council (PCC) confirmed talks have been ongoing with funding partners, with the overall aim of improving the existing outdoor facilities.
The talks have also included the redevelopment of the much maligned all weather pitch, which could get a new artificial surface, and the upgrading of the athletics track to regional competition level.
A PCC spokesman confirmed public consultation on various plans to improve the facilities will start in coming weeks.
“The council has been in talks with the Football Association of Wales, Welsh Hockey Union and Sportlot in regards to the development of facilities at Maldwyn Leisure Centre in Newtown,” he said.
“There is a specific refurbishment plans for Maldwyn Leisure Centre with any work likely to start in the next financial year.”
Users of the facilities will now be invited to take part in a public consultation to gauge their views on the development of the centre.
Maldwyn Leisure Centre has previously outlined plans to host national athletics meetings, while the Welsh FA Trust has advocated the development of a third generation pitch in the Newtown area.
However the council will not decide on the priorities of the project until the completion of a public consultation.
“It is important that the individuals and clubs which currently use the facilities at Maldwyn are asked their opinions and that will be happening in the forthcoming few weeks.
“It is still at an early stage, but the development of facilities at Maldwyn Leisure Centre would represent good news for the local area.”
Welsh FA Trust officer Tim Broome hopes a new artificial pitch will be installed at a site in the Newtown area, soon.
“The area is crying out for such a facility,” said Broome. “So many clubs use the current pitch, which is not getting any younger.
“An artificial pitch at Newtown, using the same third generation surface as TNS at Park Hall, would mean clubs of all ages could use the pitch at any time of the day or night while also making money for the centre.”
