TESCO is set to open its doors in Gwersyllt.

Supermarket chiefs have confirmed they will be setting up shop at the site of the current Somerfield supermarket, which will cease trading at the site next month.

A host of new jobs also look set to be created at the new store.

A Tesco spokesman said: “I can confirm that we will be converting the store on Dodds Lane into a Tesco. The roles of all existing staff members will be safeguarded and new positions will also be created.

“However, I’m afraid that the development programme has not been finalised so we don’t have any further information at the present stage.

“This will be available within the next couple of weeks and we will also have a better gauge of the number of new jobs, as well as where the local recruitment centre will be.”

A spokesman for The Co-operative Group said: “We can confirm we have reached an agreement to sell the Somerfield store on Dodds Lane, Gwersyllt, to Tesco as a going concern.

“Members of staff at the store, 11 full-time and 20 part time, have been informed and all will transfer to the new operator with their terms and conditions of employment maintained.

“The last day of trading as The Co-operative Food will be October 6.

“We are pleased to have concluded a deal which ensures employment for the staff, as well as a continuing service for the community.

“We would like to thank our shoppers for their valued custom at Dodds Lane over the years. We are committed to providing a quality retail offering for the communities of North Wales and as well as looking at several new sites in the area, we are constantly reviewing our existing portfolio of stores.”

I think Tesco will be a good thing for Gwersyllt.

I wonder if it will be an Express or Metro rather than a full store.

Again good news for area, increase the number of shoppers to the area and may help other local businesses by increasing trade, at the same time prevent some shoppers having to commute to Wrexham retail parks for weekly shopping. If it's an Express or Metro, the food price are normally higher than a Tesco supermarket, not sure how this one will fair but still good news and securing jobs.

Tesco is to the world of household retailing what the Murdock empire has been, at long last, revealed to be to the world of "reputable" journalism. At least it has failed in Japan and is not a success in the U.S..

Why is the Co-op - an ethical organisation - disposing of this store? Probably because it is not making an adequate return(profit). Tesco may be able to reverse that - but at what cost to existing smaller businesses in that area? Do not celebrate its arrival too soon. Its impact in an area can devastate long established retailing infrastructure to the long term detriment of a community.

Somerfield is quite expensive compared to Tesco... so Tesco should do well there... but as zyfile13 has said... it may have its consequences.

Tesco'a are upping their prices already. In the past Tesco has screwed it's supliers and passed on the savings to the customers, but now that is changing rapidly,Tesco now screw it's customers as well as it's suppliers and passes the benefit on to it's shareholders..it can do this because dense morons like Warren Coleman and the Cefn community and Wrexham planning committee have allowed them to build in places like Cefn, thus cornering the market!!.Welcome Tesco at your peril.
