NEWTOWN Wanderers head into the season full of optimism after strengthening their squad ahead of the August 20 kick-off.

The newly formed Montgomeryshire League side feared the worst after struggling to attract players earlier in the summer but have since snapped up a host of players ahead of their season opener at home to Kerry Reserves on August 20.

Striker Jamie Smart joins from Carno and is joined by the experienced Tim Williams, Dave Rimmer and Mark Davies in signing on at the Riverside.

The club has also signed former Berriew goalkeeper Wayne Thomas while striker Austin Oliver has also signed having moved to the area from Bristol.

Chairman Jim McBride said: “We are delighted with the squad we have assembled. A few weeks ago we were struggling and did not know if we were going to be ready for the season.

“Now we have a strong squad of Newtown lads who want to play for the Wanderers and represent their town in the Montgomeryshire League.”
