ELEVEN soldiers based in Chester – who have just returned from Afghanistan – have been honoured by the Queen.
The group, from the Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry, yesterday received operational medals following a gruelling five-month tour in the Helmand province.
Her Majesty, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the armoured regiment, shook hands and talked briefly with each of the soldiers as she presented them with the awards at Lichfield Cathedral.
The soldiers, who train at Fox Barracks, off Liverpool Road, in Chester, were among a total of 35 soldiers and officers who were honoured. The Queen also attended a service of thanksgiving at the event, and was greeted by the honorary colonel of the regiment, Major General Andrew Farquhar. She visited the National Memorial
Arboretum to honour members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty last
year.
