THE reformation of the Radnor Referees Association (RRA) has been welcomed by leading football administrators.
Spar Mid Wales League referees appointments officer and Watson Associates Mid Wales League (South) secretary Paul Worts has raised alarm at the falling number of officials across the region.
Worts warned with an increase in Mid Wales League membership, as well as the addition of new clubs at grassroots level, the region would need more referees than ever in the future.
“The expansion of the Spar Mid Wales League, coupled with the new clubs admitted both into the Mid Wales League (South) and Montgomeryshire League, means we will need more referees to cover all games,” said Worts.
“The reformation of the Radnor Referees Association after a break of several years is welcome, as it will provide a great platform for referees to share concerns and pass on help to younger referees.”
Worts warned that the shortage of match officials had prompted local and national campaigns to drum up recruitment.
“Central Wales now has its own referee development officer, with a remit of identifying young referees who show promise,” he added.
“Such referees would be monitored and a pathway right up the leagues identified.”
Worts hopes the progress of Llanrhaeadr’s Huw Jones to the UEFA list of referees and Newtown’s Mark Farrington’s promotion to the Welsh Premier officials list can act as inspiration.
“These two referees both officiated in the local leagues before progressing through the system, so it shows that it can be done with enough hard work and dedication.
“I would advise any former player or any young person looking to become involved in football to consider taking up refereeing.”
Central Wales football development officer Tim Broome also backed the formation of the RRA.
“It is vital that we increase the number of match officials across the region and the reformation of the RRA is a massive boost in the bid to increase referee numbers and standards in that area,” he said.
Radnor Referees spokesman Jack Watkins said: “Unless action is taken now to recruit the next generation of referees I fear Central Wales football will be in trouble in a few years.
“I hope there is a good turn-out for our first meeting and the association can go on to provide a free and informed forum for officials.”
The first open meeting of the Radnor Referees Association will take place at Penybont’s Severn Arms at 8pm on Monday, July 25 with existing and new officials urged to attend.
