FORMER Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik is taking legal advice over his belief that his mobile phone was hacked.
The Liberal Democrat claims that his phone was targeted by tabloid journalists during and following his relationship with Sian Lloyd.
The phone hacking row, which has been rumbling along since 2003, was thrust into the public spotlight two weeks ago with the revelation that News of the World staff may have hacked the phone of the missing teenager Milly Dowler, who was later found murdered.
Further allegations that the paper had hacked the phones of the families of dead British military personnel led to its closure with the final edition published last Sunday.
Mr Opik said he had harboured suspicions that he had been targeted for the past four to five years.
He said: “It was hacked in 2007 but no-one would listen, I was telling people and they just weren’t listening.
“Since then I have employed Charlotte Harris, probably the best legal counsel in the country on this subject.
“After lots of effort she has spoken to the police who showed her what I have always believed.”
He added: “They showed me evidence which confirms my beliefs.”
