POLICE have arrested five people from the Wolverhampton area in relation to the robbery of a G4S security employee at Tesco in Welshpool.
The robbery took place late on Monday, June 27 as security guards from G4S were transferring cash at the store.
The five people arrested have been interviewed by detectives at Newtown Police Station and have been bailed for further enquiries to continue
It is not known if they were replenishing cash machines or transferring store taking.
Rumours around Welshpool suggest that as much as £25,000 was taken but no-one from Dyfed-Powys Police or G4S have been able to confirm this.
It is the third time in six months that Welshpool has been in the thick of a serious robbery.
Just before Christmas, armed robbers fought with jewellery shop owner on Church Street before fleeing empty handed, while last month the robbers of a Machynlleth bank set off on foot after ditching their getaway car at the Flash Leisure Centre.
"This is the second such incident we have had in Mid Wales in five weeks," said Super Intendant Huw Meredith.
"These incidents are, however, thankfully still extremely rare and unusual in our area and we are working closely in conjunction with the security industry and other partners to review current security arrangements.
"If anybody sees anything or anybody suspicious around cash machines, cash deliveries or cash security vans they should contact police immediately using the 999 system."
Detective Inspector Greg Williams of the Serious and Organised Crime Team said: "I would ask that if anyone has any information in relation to the above incident, which occurred at about 11.40pm in Tesco Welshpool, to get in touch.
"And also, anyone who saw a black S4/A4 Audi coupe (RY54 SZX) or blue Mercedes C180 Kompressor coupe (YE51 YBY) in suspicious circumstances during that day or previous days is urged to please contact the Major Incident Room on 101.
“The five people arrested have been interviewed by detectives at Newtown Police Station and have been bailed for further enquiries to continue.”
