FISHGUARD has chosen its next Jemima Nicholas – keeping the history of the 18th century heroine alive.

Jemima Nicholas led a group of Welsh women in traditional dress to capture French soldiers who landed at Fishguard in 1797.

She had been played for many years by Yvonne Fox, who died in 2010.

The latest actress to take on the role is Jacqui Scarr, who beat Debbie John to the title in a public vote.

Ms Scarr’s first public engagement is in six weeks when she will appear at a music festival held in the town – so the race is on to make her costume with rumours that Welsh designer David Emanuel may be involved.

She said she was delighted to have won and hoped her supporters would be her army in the future.

Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council said there had been huge support for their efforts to find a new Jemima.

Deputy mayor Cllr Mike Lloyd said: “I think Jacqui will do an excellent job, she is a bundle of energy. We know that no-one could replace Yvonne, she was extraordinary, but I think everyone will quickly warm to Jacqui.”

Town clerk Sarah McColl-Dorion said: “Yvonne Fox was a huge personality and beloved member of the community playing Jemima Nicholas.

“Very sadly, she died a few years ago and our towns have been without a Jemima Nicholas since.”

The search for a new Jemima was held in the pub where the French army’s surrender is said to have been negotiated – The Royal Oak.
