AN ORDER for a disabled parking space at Fiveways roundabout has been put in by Powys County Council - but the parking space already exists.
A notice placed in last week’s County Times by the traffic and safety systems manager for Powys County Council, stated that a proposed traffic order would permit disabled persons’ vehicles to park “for periods not exceeding three hours” near Fiveways roundabout, “within 17 metres south, adjacent to the Automobile Palace, for a distance of 12.5 metres.”
However, explained Llandrindod County Councillor Gary Price, the space has already been there for 12 months.
“A disabled parking bay was never part of the original design but with Disability Powys being there it was required,” said Cllr Price.
“I believe people have been parking there who don’t hold blue disabled parking badges, and that is why the order has now been brought forward, so that police can deal with the people parking there.
“It is amazing that a disabled parking bay which was created and constructed for almost one year has never had an official traffic order on it," Cllr Price said.
“Had it not been for a local disabled organisation informing the County Council, then it would have remained the same.”
A spokesperson for Powys County Council confirmed that the parking space was a late addition to the Fiveways roundabout, requested by an organisation within the Autopalace, and that the Welsh Government had requested PCC get started with the legal work to put in an official order for it.
According to the notice, details of the proposals are contained in the draft order which together with a map shows the length of the road concerned and a statement of the council’s reasons for proposing to make the order.
This may be examined during office hours at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells.
