A SPITFIRE pilot from Knighton has been honoured at his school over 70 years after his death in the Battle of Britain.
On Tuesday, June 21 a special service and presentation took place at John Beddoes school, Presteigne when a memorial plaque was presented to the school in remembrance of Jack Hamar, killed in service during the 1940 Battle of Britain.
Jack was the only local pilot who went to John Beddoes to be killed in the Battle of Britain.
After shooting down a number of Ju 88’s and Bf 109’s he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, but was killed in his spitfire on September 17, and his mother went to Buckingham Palace to accept the medal from King George VI.
For more about Jack's life, as well as the Llanidloes Battle of Britain pilot Russel Hamer who has also been honoured recently, see this week's County Times.
