COMPUTER users are being warned against a scam operating in Flintshire.
Mum-of-two Carol Deniz, of Pontblyddyn, was contacted over the phone by a man claiming to be from Microsoft’s service department who told her he would be able to fix a major issue on her computer which could pose a security risk.
But she became suspicious after the caller tried to initiate the system’s remote access controls, which could have allowed him to view sensitive information such as passwords and banking details.
Carol said: “He said he was from Microsoft’s Windows service department and there were some major faults with my computer.
“He said he would sort it out for free.
“I went to the computer and he told me if I did not fix it and if I did any online banking or purchased anything it could result in funds going from my account.
“It was a scam. He was trying to get remote access to my computer. When I became suspicious, he really tried to put the pressure on me.”
The caller was able to provide information as to the occupants of the house and said the records were kept after buying Microsoft products.
Stuart Aston, chief security adviser for Microsoft UK, said: “We are aware of scams involving people claiming to be from Microsoft and needing remote access to consumers PCs.
“We would like to remind users of Microsoft software that the company does not keep track of consumers that purchase their software and does not directly contact consumers for any reason whatsoever.
“Do not trust any caller claiming to be from Microsoft and needing access to your
home PC.”
