A COUNCIL decision to turf over a colourful flower bed has outraged Rhos on Sea residents.
Grass has been laid over one of two flower beds on the village’s Cayley Embankment, which sits in a prominent position above the promenade.
But businesses and councillors are furious over the removal of the flowers, which have been a point of attraction for visitors to the area for years.
Cllr Phil Edwards said “This sort of thing beggars belief I am almost lost for words. We have been working so hard this past 12 months to get the whole community to work together with us in an effort to improve the village for residents and support local businesses by doing what we can to attract more tourists and then this sort of nonsense happens.
“We had no idea this was going to happen, we were given no chance of seeking alternative solutions. Making and keeping places attractive and clean, having good basic amenities does attract people to an area, yet here we are busily making the place less attractive, and I am absolutely furious about it.”
Hotelier Susan Hazelden, from the Plas Rhos Bed and Breakfast Hotel, said tourists from around the world would compliment the floral displays.
She said: “A lot of residents are really upset about it because we’ve always had them and it enhances Rhos on Sea. Also for tourism it is absolutely essential we have all this.
“I can’t understand the mentality. They’ve got to care for one of the beds and they’ve still got to cut the grass. A lot of residents here are dumbfounded by their attitude.”
According to Conwy County Borough Council, Rhos on Sea has been enhanced by recent work which has improved the area for residents and visitors.
Peter Barton Price, Parks Manager, said: “We have enhanced many areas within Colwyn Bay and Rhos on Sea. This has led to the achievement of Green flag status in Queen’s Gardens, the creation of an orchard at Rhos Fynach and additional allotment sites at Tan y Bryn, whilst ensuring additional seasonal bedding is placed into more prominent positions such as Combermere Gardens.
“With these improvements we consider that Colwyn Bay and Rhos on Sea have been enhanced.”
