A CHARITY football match is to be held in honour of a Rhyl soldier killed in Afghanistan.
The match at Rhyl FC’s Belle Vue ground on June 22, is being held in memory of father of three Michael Taylor, 12 months after he was killed in a fire fight while serving with his regiment 40 Commando Royal Marines.
Proceeds from the match and a charity auction will go towards two charities, Adam’s Hoofing Hut and Scotty’s Little Soldiers, both of which were set up in memory of soldiers killed while serving in Afghanistan.
Michael’s partner, Sonia, said: “We as a family are immensely proud of Michael and what he achieved whilst being a Marine and find it incredibly important that the first anniversary of his death is marked with a fun event, like the football match, which was a favourite sport.
“Watching his sons play the sport was one of his favourite past times, me and my boys are very touched at the amount of support that has been shown so far and are still appealing for as many people as possible to back us up as without the help of others this event will not be able to go ahead.“
L/Cpl Taylor, 30, died after he was shot in the Sangin district of Helmand province while protecting his patrol base when under enemy fire.
The match, which will be played between a team of Michael’s family and friends, captained by his eldest son Ethan, will play against a team of friends from the Royal Marines.
Tickets to the match, which kicks off at 1pm, cost £2 and can be bought in advance, or a charge of £3 will be collected on the door.
A charity auction follows at the Sunnyvale Holiday Park in Kinmel Bay, featuring a number of amazing lots, including signed football memorabilia, being a fireman for a day and a day at a luxury Spa.
Organisers are also still looking for further items to auction. If you have anything to offer in support of the event, contact Sonia Fleming on 01745 342047.
