Travel to Cardiff and join the Power Mad protest

MORE than 1,000 people are expected to descend on Cardiff Bay next week to protest against plans to blight the Montgomeryshire landscape with 47 metre high steel pylons and a 20-acre electricity substation.

More than 20 buses will take protesters in Montgomeryshire to the Welsh capital on Tuesday, while others are arriving by car, train and foot.

And there is still time for you to join the protest – simply book your seat on a bus to Cardiff by calling Carol Davies on 01691 831 008.

Emphasising the importance of the protest, a spokesperson for the Montgomeryshire Against Pylons group said: “Let us leave the Welsh Assembly with little doubt as to exactly how strongly we, the people of Montgomeryshire and its surrounding areas, feel regarding the impact of the proposed windfarms, hubs and pylons that they are so blithely forcing on Mid Wales.

“Proposed plans would see the heartland of the county disappear under concrete and massive wind turbines, as high as the London Eye, together with supporting 400,000 volt cables.”

MP Glyn Davies, who will be speaking at the protest rally, added: “It will be the biggest protest ever to be staged outside the Welsh Assembly Government building.

“It is very important to me that we show the strength of feeling there is in Montgomeryshire and that we do our utmost to persuade the Welsh Assembly not to go ahead with their proposals.

“The consequence of the proposals would be to totally destroy the place we love by industrialising the uplands with wind turbines and desecrating our valleys with hideous cables and pylons.

“If they choose to ignore us then we need to make sure they know how we, the people of Montgomeryshire, feel so they cannot deny any responsibility for what they do.”

The decision for this does not lie with the Welsh Government. As MP Glyn Davies is putting his energies into the wrong elected body. Although given the UK Government's commitment to cutting carbon emissions by 2030, quite rightly he will be asked not to stand in the way of meeting the targets. He needs to start proving solutions for our energy gap that don't contribute to climate change rather than promote montgomeryshire as an anti renewable development county.

Glyn is blaming WAG for TAN8, when in reality, a wind farm can be built anywhere in Wales, even outside TAN8 areas - and he knows this! Also UK govt ordered TAN8 to be drawn up as part of national targets to reduce carbon emissions. The govt have has facts and figures on wind output for decades, so if they didn't work, they wouldn't be pressing ahead with plans to invest in MORE!!!

True Sam - i think WAG is being made the target because of the way the issue has been farmed locally by politicians and the media. The bigger issues of climate change. energy security and sustainability have been missed from the debate, making people feel that they will only loose out from this. Underground is still an option and i hope it goes ahead this way.

Yes, underground cables would be better and keep some of the NIMBYs happy. They crow about exporting electric/water out of wales, yet they quite happily sit back when they import their electric from other parts of wales. But it's quite funny watching the protesters get worked up and I do enjoy reading their scare tactics which are mostly lies to instigate PANIC!!!!

The attempts to characterise this protest as something stirred up by politicians is plain wrong. What sparked the protest was the plans of National Grid and Scottish Power which are totally unacceptable. If the county of Montgomeryshire is not anti-pylon, anti-hub and anti-turbine, perhaps your contributors would like to let us know when and where their pro winds meetings are, and how many attend

The Governments in London and Cardiff, which share responsibility for energy policy, know perfectly well that windfarms are inefficient and that the environmental destruction they cause is out of all proportion to any benefit. It's a con trick left over from the Blair era; thank God most people are now waking up to the fact!

The IPCC made up of leading scientists across the world say we need to reduce our carbon emissions. The Uk Government this week announced to cut carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2025. Wind plays a key role in meeting this 50 per cent target along with reducing the amount of energy we use in the first instant. We need to move to clean and sustainable sources of energy which give us the greatest energy security and boost our local economy and this project is an example of that.

I wish people would do thier reseach before making comments like these. It is you who are miss leading the public - how many consultations have you been to? How many times have you quizzed National grid & SP? I know what we are telling people sound unbeliveable & thats why you think we are scarmongering, but put weeks & years of reseach into it & then come to one of the public meetings & present them.

The IPCC is a discredited scaremongering organisation, based on politically corrupted science, whose predictions have been shown to be hollow. The very fact they had to change the name from "global warming" to "climate change" indicates that. Even if the scare were real, there are far more efficient means of carbon reduction than windfarms.

I’m flying over from my workplace in Luxembourg to be present at the Cardiff rally. There’s no way I’ll consent to the heritage of everybody being sacrificed for the profit of a greedy few, or to the loss of National Park quality landscape for cheap politicians’ tricks. Many thanks to Glyn, Russell, the County Times, MAP and CUP! See you on Tuesday.

Research from leading organisations WWF, FoE, sustainable Development Commission, Stockholm Institute all point to the fact that wind plays a key role in reducing our carbon emissions. Flying to this protest isn’t going to help either but then again if you can’t make the connection between the way you lead your lifestyle and the impact this has then no wonder you are opposing wind energy as you obviously don’t want to address our global need to reduce carbon emissions.

We do need to reduce our CO2 emissions and we’ve set some very ambitious targets. Wind energy CAN contribute to this but this possibility is being used by some very large windfarm developers to make an awful lot of money without actually contributing to the objective. They rely on the support of every responsible person who supports the move to reduce CO2.By the time this scam is uncovered we will have wasted £millions in subsidies and future generation will never forgive us.

I think the overhead cables and the proposed hub are all part of the green energy policy and we were suckered into accepting the wind farms, without us being told the full story about the rest of the plans, I do not think any amount of protest will change those plans.

  15. Posted by: TognBee at 09:55 on 23 May 2011 Report

The massive wind farm proposals are dishonest. First, a wind farm is proposed and accepted. Then an extension is added. And another. THIS IS NOT HONESTY. If the true scale were visible at the outset it would be instantly rejected. Wind power CAN NOT replace ANY power stations. It is seen as the cheapest solution to meeting EU carbon reduction requirements. A solution MUST be found. But first identify the root cause of the problem. Excess carbon production is not the problem, just a symptom.

  16. Posted by: Charles Turpin at 10:49 on 23 May 2011 Report

Indeed I do not accept that there is a "global need to reduce carbon emissions"; the alleged evidence that C02 drives global warming has been massively manipulated, and it is disappointing that some naive souls (fortunately a reducing number) still uncritically accept the tosh they are fed. However, even if there were a need to reduce carbon emissions, these plans are still not a solution!
