A LLANFAIR Caereinion man caught driving at 97 miles an hour through thick fog will be sentenced at the crown court in June.

Peter Arthur Sherwood, 48, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

Welshpool Magistrates Court heard on  Tuesday that at 6.29am on Monday, March 28, two police officers were patrolling at Golfa Bank, Welshpool, when they saw a VW Golf driving through thick fog towards Welshpool town. It clocked up a speed of 97.24 miles per hour.

The car continued on to Salop Road, still travelling fast despite there being pedestrians on both sides of the road, the court heard. At this point the average speed of the vehicle was 47.9 miles per hour.

The Golf passed over two zebra crossings and continued towards Buttington. Police estimated that the visibility was less than 50 metres, but the vehicle continued to accelerate to Cefn bridge, Trewern, a well-known accident hotspot, Ms Roberts said.

Driving at 64 miles per hour the Golf caught up with a Vauxhall Safira driven by a man named Mr Howells. The Golf followed the Safira to Carreg Bank before attempting to overtake, but was forced to swerve back in to avoid oncoming traffic. The Golf then successfully overtook but swerved once more to avoid a lorry.

Mr Howells then said he had to brake heavily to let the Golf back in.

Police officers continued to follow the Golf and witnessed it overtake three times before finally stopping the vehicle at the Windmill Inn, Halfway House.

The defendant said: “I’ve been driving like an absolute idiot. Am I going to lose my licence?”

Ceri Edwards, mitigating, said the defendant had been feeling pressure at work which was the reason for his behaviour on March 28, and has since rented a room in Shrewsbury five days a week so he can still go to work despite losing his licence.

Magistrates described it as a case of prolonged bad driving and committed the matter to Mold Crown Court for sentencing on June 16. Sherwood was disqualified in the interim and released on unconditional bail.
