JUST as the bookies predicted Kirsty Williams held her seat as constituency Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire for another term.

The leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats has now held the seat for 12 years, since the Assembly was formed in 1999.

Speaking after the results were announced in the early hours of Friday, May 6, Kirsty thanked her husband and campaign team for their hard work.

She also paid tribute to the late Lord Richard Livsey, "whose hard work and dedication to this constituency laid the foundations for this result," she said.

Proceedings were slow to get going at the count in Llandrindod Wells, as the counters had to wade through not only constituency votes but also regional ballot papers and AV votes.

The last ballot papers were dropped off at the Pavilion around 1am and the army of 50 counters were sorting for an hour and a half before the count began in earnest.

In all they sorted 28,348 ballot papers meaning that the turnout was 52.9%, a figure more inkeeping with a general election, showing good voter turnout across the constituency.

This is compared to 47.65% voter turnout in neighbouring Montgomeryshire, which saw Conservative county councillor Russell George swoop to victory over nearest rival Liberal Democrat Wyn Williams, with a 3,000-vote majority.

In Brecon and Radnorshire it became apparent early on that Kirsty was gaining the lead, with Conservative candidate Chris Davies threatening to dent the Liberal Democrat majority.

Plaid Cymru, here represented by Llandrindod Wells mayor Gary Price, admitted early on that they were not optimistic of gains across Wales, while the Liberal Democrats conceded that they were facing their fewest number of AMs since the Assembly began, for example losing Montgomeryshire to the Conservatives.

While the votes were being counted, Conservative candidate Chris Davies told County Times reporter Nathan Rowden he wasn't feeling optimistic.

"People have voted for the devil they know, so to speak," he said.

The result was announced at 4.11am, that Kirsty Williams of the Welsh Liberal Democrats had won by around 3,000 votes, with a total of 12,201.

Second was Chris Davies of the Welsh Conservatives with 9,444; third was Chris Lloyd of Labour with 4,797; and fourth Gary Price of Plaid Cymru, with 1,906.
