2,000 attend power plans protest rally in Welshpool

THE people of Mid Wales have made it clear they will not roll over and let the Welsh Assembly Government desecrate the landscape with wind turbines and steel pylons.

Almost 2,000 attended a protest rally at Welshpool Livestock Market on Wednesday night, with campaigners claiming the huge turbines and pylons will blight the rural countryside.

Plans are now being put in place to repeat the protest outside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on May 10.

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies, who organised the rally, started the meeting by telling protesters: “By turning up you show you care and that we don’t want our beautiful area to be destroyed by people who don’t live here.

“The government in Wales is prepared to dump on us, so what we need to do is take as many people as possible down to Cardiff so when they look out of the windows from their comfy offices in Cardiff Bay they will see we are not prepared to let them do it.

“If politicians in Cardiff are going to destroy this part of Wales, which you and I love, I want them to know we will never forgive them. It will be our Tryweryn.”

Myfanwy Alexander, a writer and broadcaster from Llanfair Caereinion, added: “The turbines are not here because of the wind and they are not here to save the planet, they are here because of politicians and money.

“We have as much right to a future as anyone else and we don’t have to put up with these plans. Tonight we are giving the first punch in what will be a long and bruising battle.”

Jane Ashley, the daughter of Mid Wales fashion designer Laura Ashley,  returned to her roots and told the worried Mid Wales residents: “My mother was inspired by Montgomeryshire and so have a lot of other people been.

“These plans must be opposed with all of our hearts and I will do all I can to help.”
Alison Davies, of the campaign group Conservation of Upland Montgomeryshire, urged people to fight as one to stop the windfarms and everything connected with them.

She also read out letters from Lord Alex Carlisle, the former MP for Montgomeryshire, and television presenter Iolo Williams.

Lord Carlisle was quoted as saying: “Tan 8 is poorly conducted and displays awful judgment.”

Iolo Williams wrote: “I detest windfarms and wish we did not have any. We have to get Tan 8 thrown out now and protect the countryside.”

What a farce! Glyn is going to be taking this matter to the Welsh assembly! It was national govt that told WAG to write tan 8. If Tan8 is to be scrapped then the call must come from David Cameron!!! But hang on, it gets better! The welsh conservatives want to INCREASE renewable energy too including MORE windfarms in Wales! . He's got us barking up the wrong tree AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come back Lembit, all is forgiven.

It's heartening to see the meeting was a success; well done those that went along! Now drive it home to the idiots in Cardiff. I live abroad, and can't participate directly, but there are important principles at stake here, and more than just Mid-Wales will be watching.

If TAN 8 was ordered as a piece of political showmanship by one Tony Blair, that's one more good reason for scrapping it!

couldn't agree more with the Tony B-liar comment. Somehow I think that the national government are too deeply concerned about their green energy targets. Wales has a goal of reaching 10% of it's energy met by renewables by the year 2010, we have surpassed this by generating 13%. I very much doubt that national government are going to scrap something that on paper is seen as a success.

Back to original story. various different web sites (bbc/itv/other newspapers) are carrying the story that over 1000 attended the meeting. It's all very confusing who to believe, especially when the leaders of this campaign are pulling the wool over our eyes by not telling us the full facts.

BBC have downgraded their story to state "hundreds" rather than 1000 attended the meeting.

I take it that all those opposed to the wind farms and additional pylons are happy to be cut from the national grid then ??? Wind farms in Wales....Bring them on !

Ideally I wouldn't want a pylon in my back yard. However, windpower is essential to a sustainable future, and Powys will always be a good source of it, so they have to go through someone's back yard. NIMBYism at it's very best!

To Sam - Clearly you were not at Welshpool . The meeting had to be delayed by 15 mins to allow all the cars & coaches in. BBC & ITV were going live on the evening but left shortly before because of the tradegy at Clywedog. Clearly 1500+ present and united in fighting this madness

If you can't trust the local paper, or the MP and his understudy to tell us the correct facts, then who can we trust?

I was at this meeting & witnessed how many there were there. It was 1500 to 2000.Sam is talking rubbish as usual. If we ignore him he might crawl back in his hole?

She will not crawl back in her hole! This is too important an issue for the political leaders to be telling us lies. We need facts, and we need to be told how it pans out. It's all very nice being told what we want to hear, but this is reality we are dealing with here.

The rally at Cardiff in May at WAG.is the 1st place to start.Glyn Davies is the man to lead us.He was very passionate at the meeting at WLM. CUP have 1000,s of petition signatures. Its looking very positive. I still do not believe what sam is saying. Westminster will be the next rally if wag does not work out. So forget trying to change my mind sam.End of!

would they like to take a chance and hold a public meeting when the public are not woking? ie:saturday or sunday, I am sure, we the people of mid wales would show our true adversion to the proposed of a sub station and any pylons.
