THREE Powys athletes have been included in the Welsh Schools squad for the forthcoming Mini London Marathon on April 17.

A total of 36 athletes, from all eight districts of Wales, will represent the country in the ninth Mini London Marathon.

Llandrindod Wells twins Ffion and Rhianwedd Price are joined by up and coming athlete and fellow Llandrindod High School student, Heidi Davies in the Wales squad.

The Price sisters will compete in the under 17s competition, while Davies is in the under 13s.

Welsh Schools chairperson Kath Elias said: “The 36 athletes represent the eight districts and we are delighted that it is a balance of athletes with past experience of competing in the event and those who are taking part for the first time.”

Tributes were paid to the commitment of Ffion Price, who has been a big supporter of the event having competed five times.

“Ffion deserves special mention as she is competing in the event for the sixth and final time.”

The team heads to the capital on Saturday April 16 before taking on the cross-country the next morning.

Ffion and Rhianwedd will compete in the under 17s with 13-year-old Davies making her London Marathon bow in the under 13s after impressing in qualifiers.

All three impressed in the Powys Cross Country Championships in Newtown and Welsh Cross Country Championships which were held in Brecon.

Ffion has also become a mainstay of long distance running in Wales after winning the European Junior Mountain Running Championship in Italy last year.

Elias added: “With the opposition including English regional teams, as well as Scotland and Northern Ireland, all the athletes are going to find it a very challenging competition.”
