TWO new sculptures are to be introduced in Llandrindod Wells to mark the inner gateways to the town.
Artists have been appointed to design and install sculptures to reflect the historic and contemporary heritage of the town and its people. Subject to planning approval, the sculptures will be situated in the grounds of the Ridgebourne and the War Mem
orial Hospital.

The project is part of the regeneration work for Llandrindod Wells, which is being led by Powys County Council and involves many different organisations in the town.

The two artists who have been appointed to carry out the work are Philipa Lawrence and Tony Stallard.

Ms Lawrence is a Wales-based, mixed media installation artist and will work on a piece for the hospital grounds.

She has exhibited as far afield as Australia, Japan, Canada and Iceland and more recently successfully held her first solo exhibition at the Oriel Davies Gallery in Newtown.

Mr Stallard makes site specific work in metal, stone and light, and will create designs for the artwork at the Ridgebourne site.

He has worked extensively on regeneration schemes throughout the UK, Europe and abroad.

Mr Stallard is particularly interested in exploring the history of the town to inform his work and explains that he is interested in creating a light responsive structure using local stone that would reference the regenerative nature of the local waters.

Lucy Bevan, Powys County Council's art development officer, said: "This project will offer Llandrindod Wells a unique and valuable opportunity to boast public artworks of national importance which will both augment the image of the town to visitors and be of relevance to local people."

Urging Llandrindod Wells residents to get involved in the project, County Councillor David Peter said: "The success of this project depends crucially on the artists' creations having been informed by the views of local residents, and I would urge the people of Llandrindod to engage fully with the artists if they are approached for their views."

Town Councillor Will Francis said: "The Town Council believe that the sculptures should enhance the attractiveness of the town both in the Ridgebourne and War Memorial Hospital areas."

It is hoped the sculptures will be in place by the summer.
