WELSHPOOL Town Football Club is anxiously awaiting the final decision from the Town Council before pressing forward with plans for a ground swap with Waterloo Rovers.

"Until the council has rubber stamped the recommendation from the Recreation Committee it would be silly and unfair of us to go ahead with anything at this stage," said club chairman Steve Hughes.

"Once the decision has been confirmed we can press ahead.

"The original plans are now out of date and will need revisiting before we take the scheme to planning stage and start to seek funding for the project.

"We are extremely grateful to the councillors who backed the ground swap proposal and to the understanding of the officials of both Waterloo Rovers and Welshpool Rugby Club in enabling the process to reach this stage," he added.

"We have become a victim of our own success by representing the town at the highest possible level in Wales.

"New requirements mean that we must have an enclosed stadium in two years time and that is not possible on our present ground.

"We have made extensive enquiries to find an alternative solution, as did Town Clerk Robert Robinson, but there simply is no alternative."

Mr Hughes was keen to point out that the club does much more than simply field a side in the Welsh Premier League.

"We have an infrastructure of teams from junior to senior age groups and also field ladies and girls teams at a competitive level."

"We operate a highly successful academy with well over 100 boys and girls coming through the scheme.

"A primary schools initiative has been running for three years and this is about to be expanded through a healthy eating and living promotion.

And we are launching summer coaching camps for primary schools throughout the holidays.

"While we are proud to put Welshpool on the map via the Welsh Premier League it is important that people realise just how much else is going on," he added.

A final decision the proposed pitch swap will be made by the full Welshpool Town Council on Wednesday, July 23.

Fair play for all,

welshpool 06/10/2008 15:57:44
Regarding the much talked about ground sharing between the towns two princible soccer teams. Can I ask the County Times to finally get the Town Council to give a definitive answer to the question of clubs charging members of the public for access on to what in essence is a public place, which I am told is provided for the townspeople for their recreation and benifit. Are those hireing the Councils facilities at the recreation grounds allowed by the bye laws to do so?
