IT'S official – Powys has got the best Welshpool in the world!
It may be hard to believe there is more than one place in the world named Welshpool, but local girl Clare Robbins came across two others during her round the world adventure.

Both places were discovered in the heart of Australia, but despite the imagination stretching to images of sea, sand and surf, the young traveller declared that neither of them compared to the green, green grass of home.

"Living here is like living in Las Vegas compared to the other two," joked Clare.

"Like over here everyone knew who everyone was in the town, but that is where the similarities ended. Believe it or not our Welshpool is by far the biggest and it definitely has the most going on.

"The population of Welshpool in Victoria was only about 500 people and the one near Perth was even worse. It was just a long industrial estate with nothing else in it."

But with the likelihood of finding two Welshpools in a country large enough to fit the British Isles in 32 times as probable as Shane Warne declaring an undeniable love for Poms, just how did Clare stumble across such places?

"When I was a little girl I looked through an atlas and found a place called Welshpool in Australia – from that day on I told my parents I would visit it one day.

"It took me about 20 years to finally get there, but I did it!" declared Clare.

"To be honest I only knew about the Welshpool in Victoria as the other one isn't in the atlas. It wasn't until I got there and was told there was another one about 500 miles away that I knew the one near Perth existed.

"I don't want to sound like a total geek, but as soon as I found out about this third Welshpool I had to go and take a look. The friend I was travelling with, who was not from the area, was a bit aghast but she came along and humoured me nonetheless."

However, not everybody shared Clare's excitement.

"I told anyone who would listen that I was from Welshpool too, but for some reason they just didn't seem to share my enthusiasm. I only came across one lady who showed any interest," added a somewhat mystified Clare.

"Although I did find a postcard of our Welshpool in a shop window – it was nice to know that somewhere, somebody had done exactly the same as me, only the other way around!"

Clare's joy was however short lived when, on her return to Wales, a friend announced she'd found another place called Welshpool, this time in Canada.

Never one to give up Clare insists she is already saving up the pounds to complete her scrapbook of Welshpools.
