"IF these theatres didn't exist, the tradition of British theatre would cease to exist."
Ex-Starsky and Hutch star David Soul made this comment a few years ago, and his sentiments still ring true to this day.

Thankfully, the Albert Hall in Llandrindod Wells has behind it a good board of people, intent on doing the best for both the Hall and the people it serves.

"There's an excellent feel about the place," said Roger Manning, treasurer for the committee which runs the Hall. "We're a very happy organisation looking forward to an interesting future."

The 400-seater hall was built in 1896, and made into a theatre in 1922. A programme started in June 2007 to renovate and restore the exterior of the building.

It has been completed recently at a cost of around £115,000. A second phase of work to the hall's interior, is being planned.

Friends and colleagues Esther Sargeant and Melinda Kennedy are planning a series of events to boost the profile of the hall, and to show what the venue is capable of.

An "Urban Dance" event is being held on July 2, which will showcase, among other things, the talents of Garthmyl breakdancer James Williams.

James featured in the County Times recently after he earned the chance to compete with his team, DNA, against the very best at a competition in Las Vegas.

Esther thinks youth is the key. She said: "We want to encourage young performers by organising and promoting events which get them involved with the hall.

"There will be a series of gigs in the future, which will bring back the life and vigour to the Albert Hall."

The committee generates funds by hiring the hall out to various groups. They believe a better equipped hall attracts better performers, which in turn attracts bigger crowds.

"The hall is fully up to date and ready for big performances," said Roger. "We have modern sound and lighting equipment, the three main dressing rooms have been completely renovated and there is a sense of anticipation about what lies ahead."
