Huge blow in the Canada Cup as striker shortage starts to cost us... by Carl Robinson

WE knew that it was going to be a big week for us with two massive matches for us, both in the league and in the Canada Cup, so the build
up to the weekend was very exciting.

We had worked very hard on shooting drills and crossing practices as goalscoring was begining to become a bit of a problem for us, with only a couple of goals in the last seven matches.

We knew what are problems were and we worked hard to try and address these, but hopefully we'll get a bit of help very soon with some new signings in that area.

And so to the game with San Jose...

We knew that a packed BMO would make them probably sit and defend in this match, but had a game plan to try and counter this.
What made the match even more exciting was that Ronnie O'Brien, my former team mate and good pal, was playing for them, as was their new signing from Norwich City, and another pal, Darren Huckerby.

Now Darren had turned us down as he did not want to play on the turf that we do, and so joined San Jose, and both probably knew they'd be in for a rough ride with the BMO faithful –and they were not to be disappointed either.

The game started at full pace and we carved out three good chances but were unable to take them.

In the 34 minute we had a gilt edged opportunity with Amado Guevara somehow managing to strike the ball over from six yards. Amado is one of our best technicians at the club, so it was a surprise that he missed. Half time arrived and we felt we should be winning but weren't so had to try and up the tempo to get that goal.

We started excellently again and were in total dominance, and it was only a matter of time before we scored – then in the 64 minute we gained a penalty. Surely this was what we needed, a bit of luck, to get us going. Amado stepped up but sent the penalty the same way as the goalkeeper guessed, and he palmed it away to safety.

We still had 25 minutes to get the winner, and we created chance after chance, but just could not get the elusive goal that we deserved.
The game ended 0-0 to everyone's frustration, but we had totally dominated possession, and the game, but could not score.

We had a 16-year-old playing up front for us, and this surely tells you that we need some help in that department. Mind you, the kid does have a big future ahead of him, but it's just not fair to rely on him so much at this time.

Sunday was our recovery day as we had to pick ourselves up for the final game of the Canada Cup tournament, a game against Montreal, a game which we had to win to go through and qualify for the Concacaf Champions League.

This had become a pressure game for us, and there was added spice that we needed to win the game, anything else would see Montreal through. So Tuesday night could not come quick enough for us, as we were eager to put the disappointment of the weekend behind us.

Tuesday arrived with massive expectations, everyone was talking about this game, and I could hardly wait for it too get started .It was another sell out at the BMO, and as the tension grew the crowd started getting louder and louder.

The game was off, and we were out of the blocks, flying, and in the 15th minute we took the lead when Rohan Ricketts headed in at the back stick to put us a goal ahead.

We were in a great position, and we knew we had to do the simple things well and keep our concentration.

Ten minutes later we conceded a bad goal direct from a corner as their centre forward scored at the front post. This was a massive blow for us, as we had control of the game, but we knew that they worked on set pieces, and were a threat, but we just didn't do our jobs right.

Half time came and the scores were level.

We came out in the second period and like on Saturday dominated the game trying to find that winning goal. We were piling on the pressure, but always knew we could get hit on the break.

In the 88th minute a curling free kick was headed on to the post by Julius James, and rolled across to line under the foot of our centre forward into the keeper's arms.....unbelievable luck..

The game ended and we were out.

It was total devastation as we sat in the changing room at the end of the match. I've been in some sad dressing rooms throughout my life, like Wolves blowing a 12-point lead to West Brom, like Sunderland losing on penalties in the play offs and Wales losing in the play off against Russia for euro 2004, and this feeling was right up there with them.

What could we say? All I could say is did we do enough to win the game? In fact, did we do enough to qualify, as this was over a 4 game mini group and not just one game...the answer was clearly no we hadn't and so we were out.

What keeps popping its ugly head is the fact we need strikers soon, as this is starting to derail our excellent start to the season that we've had.

I'm just hoping we get some in before our next match against Real Salt Lake in Utah.

What we will do is continue to work hard and give everything that we have as a team until help arrives.

So this has been a disappointing week for me and the boys here.
Oh, and to top it off it's rained two days on the trot, something that just never happens in Toronto....

Carl, you play with grit and determination day in day out. I sit in the zone, section 115. Don't for one minute think anyone in T.O. is unhappy with your level of passion, play, and intensity.

Here's to the 2nd half of this season living up to what we all know it can be.

Cheers mate,

Hats off to you Carl, I was at the game myself and figure it can only get better from here. I trust the boys feel the same way as you do and are as gutted about this as all the fans are. The supporters are behind you guys no matter what.

Cheers, best wishes to your family,

Mike
