Difficult opener at Columbus Crew after a tough week personally... by Carl Robinson

WELL, after a week that I thought couldn't get any more bizarre we played New York Red Bulls on Thursday in our second match in a three-game tournament.
New York have players such as Juan Pablo Angel and Claudio Reyna, and this shows not only the standard of players that the league are trying to bring in here but the quality of the players already here.
These two are proven top class players and full internationals.
Hopefully more will follow. The game was a full blooded match which we drew 1 - 1 and set us up for the final game against Charleston Battery.
Then on the next morning I got a call from my wife saying that my little boy was not well at all and immediately flew back to the UK to be with them all. My little man Milo was having trouble catching his breath which is every parent's worry. He seems okay at the moment but as parents you do nothing else but worry.
This weekend the season kicks off with our first match against Columbus Crew away. This will be a tough opener for us, but we have more than 2,500 fans travelling from Toronto which is incredible and hopefully they'll be able to help us get off to a good start.
A win is always good but especially in the season opener and we are confident that we can do this. With away games to follow at Washington DC and LA Galaxy coming up in the next two weeks too, then it's very important we pick up points as early as we can.
Last year we went five games before winning and therefore we were left always playing catch up.
Super Sunday came and went with the usual talking points. Great results for Man Utd and Chelsea but Arsenal slipping up again asks the usual questions......have they got too many youngsters?
What's the point of playing the most attractive football if you're not going to win things? Difficult questions, but views will vary dependent on the way you look at football.
One concern that I've seen lately in matches was the dissent problem. First of all, I thought that Ashley Cole's reaction to the referee when he was in the process of getting booked was totally wrong and not something that should be accepted.
To turn your back on the referee while he is waiting to caution you, while standing five yards away, while still being called over, is criminal. The old trick of tying your laces or messing with your pads is common but I've not seen anything like this before.
Then Javier Mascherano getting sent off for continually asking the ref 'what's that for, what's that for' seems strange.
Was it a result of officials getting tough after the Cole situation, or was it down-right stupidity from the Liverpool player.....
Opinions again will vary, but some referees you can talk to, some you can't. Some will have a laugh with you, others won't, some think it's about them and others just don't want to get noticed in the game.
The best refs hardly get noticed in matches, but it must be a nightmare trying to keep 22 grown men happy...Virtually impossible!!!
I would like to congratulate my pal Simon Davies on reaching 50 caps against Luxembourg this week. This is a great achievement, which will be topped off by leading the team out. Well done pal.
And also Mr Beckham making his 100 appearance for England is a great feat, as he has now joined an elite group of players.
